Weekend wrapup

We had a great weekend. Kicked things off on Friday night with girl time. Munchies at a girlfriends house and lots of chatting!

Saturday was the big sale day in town and I blogged yesterday about all I came home with. Only I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a kit from the quilt shop. At the time I talked myself out of it because well I'm not a quilter. Granted if you checked my crafting bookcase you wouldn't believe it. I use to sew a lot and I've always held off from quilting because I know I will love it and want it all. But I digress. We spent the afternoon hanging out with the pups and taking a long afternoon nap. We love days like that!

I did craft a weathered Beach sign in the evening. Boyd always laughs, he went to bed early and woke up to the remnants of my crafting in the garage. Thankfully he's very understanding!

Today was just one of those great relaxing days. Nothing big on the agenda other than mowing at my mom's. Today I was really wishing I had that fabric to work on a little quilt. I'll get there someday!

Instead I worked on picking up the house, laundry, dishes and crafting another weathered beach sign. We decided on "Beach Dreamin". I know we don't really live by a beach. I can see the river outside my window but there are virtually no quotes about rivers.

I also spent some time in the craft area doing some general pick up and organizing. I'm not ready for scrapping but I did a mock up for a crafted Christmas card. I like it and at the same time I don't. I colored it with chalks and it's just to time consuming. I guess I should figure out who I'd be giving them to... a shorter list would make the project more fun!

Almost forgot the other big news - for me. I went through last years pictures and figured out what I want to print. That's been a huge block for me. I think I'm going to finish up the pj 365 that I'd started. It would really fit for most of the year. Not sure what I'll do when it comes to the time we adopted Emma the dog.

On a different note I need some advice/inspiration/kick in the butt to make a change in our house. On one of the hallway walls I have 9 12x12 picture frames. They've been there for 3 years now I think. Well I'm embarrassed to say for the last 2.5 years those frames have been filled with Halloween papers. Technically only one says Halloween the others are just spider webs and Halloween colors. When I started this I was planning to change out the papers with each season. That obviously didn't work out like I'd hoped.

I've thought about putting pictures of the 4 of us in the frames but that's not tripping my trigger. Also thought about filling them with cool papers, that doesn't thrill either of us. One thought I like but don't know quite how to fulfill is to put pictures of family (parents, grandparents, people who touched our lives) in the frames.

I've been through my scrapbook pages but the colors on all the pages I like weren't working out for the space or together.

Slowly but surely I'm wrapping up all the little loose ends around the house. :)

......update

I honestly don't know where the last month or two has gone....Thursday I need to have my/our taxes done? ugh! I swear I had another week before that had to happen.

At work, my 'baby' of a project met it's major deadline for testing. Unfortunately we had to take out some functionality to concentrate on the main items. :( The lady boss was very happy that we made our deadline it made all my late nights worth it. Unfortunately we have another deadline coming up, the 15th and no one seems to care grrr! I wanted to log in tonight and work on things but the connection is broken. :(

At home I've loaded up the truck with things to donate. Very hard for me but I'm glad to get the stash out of the garage. Now to go through more areas and make some hard decisions. :)

Along with work and cleaning at home, allergies have been hitting me hard. If I spend any length of time outside I pay for it the next day. And Boyd has been off work for a few weeks and we're working on getting him healthy.

On a happy note, things seem to be taking off with my business ... Blumen Creations - I do it all :) scrapbooking, crafts, sewing, cakes, and web development. It's an odd mix I know but I feel like a jack of all trades and figured I may as well see if it can pay off.

A few weeks ago I gave a quote for 2 cakes and 300 cupcakes for a wedding. I hope that I get it and I'm terrified I will. :) The thought of making 300 cupcakes just gets me. :)

I have one business and one non profit interested in a website. A mom wanted a scrapbook for her daughters graduation, contact me last summer and realized this winter it wasn't going to happen. She still wants a book sometime.

Fun fun fun!

I came across a great new quote

It's easy to have fun if you plan for it. ~ Laura Ingalls Wilder

One of those days.....weeks....months...

Lately I've found that this is a year of missing my dad. He passed away in 2001 and while the hurt isn't as bad now it's still there. I can hardly remember what his voice sounded like and that makes me sad.

I've found myself in a position where I know I could go to my dad for advice and he would talk me through things. I know if I go to my mom for help I'll get a lecture. That's not what I need right now.

Most of it is stress both at work and at home. The work stress is what I'm putting on myself. I so wanted to make this deadline and it's not looking the best - ok so I have very high expectations we'll get something out just not in the state I wanted it. Of course it doesn't help when two of the people are hardly available to work on the project. I have no control, I'm just the leader of the project...hahahahha.

At home it's a lot of little things that banded together are one big thing. Having a puppy who is challenging us and an older dog who is not listening is not helping.

Even with all of the challenges, Emma is a good thing for our lives. She's getting me out and walking and she makes both of us smile several times a day. Buddie is getting more play time and is always the first to greet me when I get home. He's sitting inside the back door and doesn't let me get very far.

Of course our home is benefiting from my stress. I've found myself cleaning, organizing and putting things away. Tonight the freezers were the target. Took everything out of the garage and kitchen and arranged things in the chest freezer. Then I brought the most used items back up to the kitchen along with all the fruit to make Strawberry/Rhubarb/Raspberry pie. Hope to get that done this weekend. Yummo!

22 things...

22 things I've learned as a doggie Momma

1. Live in the moment. Don't stew or hold things in. Let it go and move on.

2. A warm dog is the best heating pad EVER!

3. Petting is the best stress reliever.

4. No matter what happens I know they will greet me at the door with the tails wagging 100 miles an hour.

5. Even when they are doing something wrong I find myself holding back a smile or a laugh.

6. Walking with Buddie I find I walk with my shoulders back and head up. :)

7. My dogs make me be active

8. I never thought I could love anything as much as I love Buddie.

9. My second "child" doesn't have as many pictures as the first. And she doesn't have a scrapbook yet.

10. I'm always happier when my family is all together at home. Even if we are in different parts of the house.

11. A wagging tail can almost take me down.

12. One of my favorite ways to wake up is to doggie kisses and a cappuccino on the night stand.

13. I love having dogs in the house. It's something that at one time I said I would never do.

14. It's better to pick up the dog toys before bed, they are hazardous to our health

15. I will rearrange the house and go without a table to give the dogs more room to play in the house.

16. Dogs are quick with their tongues.

17. A puppy with something she shouldn't have is faster than me. Technically she's always faster than me. Just seems extra fast sometimes.

18. Having dogs makes my house feel more like a home.

19. Rules are made to be broken.

20. The dogs make my heart full.

Wow what a difference.....

in so many things.

Wednesday was sunny and sixties. Thursday was sunny a little windy and sixties. Friday was gray, rain, sleet, snow and high in the mid thirties. This morning we woke up to 1/4 of an inch of snow on the ground and bitterly cold. At least the sun is out this afternoon and the snow is gone.

I started the weekend with a bunch of goals in mind. I ended up doing something completely different.

Since 6 pm last night and now I've worked on cleaning up the garden room. It's the room between the garage and the rest of the house. So unfortunately it becomes a general dumping spot for things that need to go somewhere else. I worked on cleaning up the half that goes to the garage. My scrapbook area is in the other half and it's relatively OK. I am SHOCKED at how quickly I got things done. Breaking down the work and doing 15-30 minute things.

Right now the area is picked up and vacuumed. A few more things still need to be done but it feels so refreshing to walk through the area now. Spring cleaning in the S house is well underway.

Plus I've gotten a few things organized in the garage - Christmas stuff that got out there but not put away. That's a very bad habit of mine. Getting things to the room they need to be in and leaving them. Not taking the time to put them away.

In reality I probably spend an hour maybe two doing all the cleaning and organizing. In the grand scheme of things it's really not much. I need to make the time to do it more often.

Now we need to get all of our donation stuff loaded in the truck and dropped off. I think that will be another day. I need to get a gift wrapped and card made for a wedding shower tomorrow.

In other news it was a happy hair cut week.

just thoughts

Have you ever looked in the mirror and wondered where you are? When did you start looking so old and where did all that gray hair come from? Is this where you are supposed to be in this house or in this job?

It's been a week of questions here. A little of the 'What might have beens' but more of is this REALLY where I'm supposed to be?

I really miss living in a city with my favorite stores. I love to craft and having to drive 20-30 mins to get to the closest store is a pain. That along with not having crafty friends who I can call on the spur of the moment to go to town is making me realize what I'm missing.

Last night around 4 I wanted to go to Hobby Lobby because they had scrapbooks and pages 50% off and I wanted to make sure I had enough pages for my pile of 2008 pages. Boyd was all for me going and I was like no I'll just stay home. He ended up taking me saying "honey I'm your friend and I'll always go with you". I so love this man.

On the trip we stopped to get some cash and while we were waiting the gas gauge dinged. I leaned over cause I thought we had a half a tank. I watched the marker move to empty and then back up to 3/4 a tank. It happened three times. I think it was Boyd's parents and Loyd letting him know that he's not alone.

I know a 20-30 min drive is nothing. It's just more fun with a friend or getting quality time with the hubby and Buddie. Of course it would help if I would make plans with people and not do so much on the spur of the moment. :)

Question for Boyd

I read this post The Trip to the Grocery Store that Changed My Life

The real post is great and I highly recommend it. A quick summary. A lady ran into her older neighbor at the grocery story. He recently lost his wife and the lady asked how he was doing. He said he was ready to start over/again with someone the complete opposite of his wife. While he loved her they had a rocky 30 yr marriage. The lady knew it was a message from God because she and her husband were headed down the same road. She left the store and made a point to rethink her life and change her relationship with her husband.

It got me to thinking, what would Boyd say/think? So I asked via text message "If I died tomorrow would u look for someone like me or someone totally different? I read a blog about an old man who wanted to start over with someone opposite of his late wife."

His responses....
"I would die by myself, because I could never find someone to replace my boo. And I would be happy to have my memories of you. plus I don't want to share the insurance :)"

"Theres only 1 person 4 me & thats u. I waited 42 yrs for u :)"

"U were like cinderella. only 1 person that twisty tie would fit"

This is one of the biggest reasons I love this man. I ask him a totally serious question and he answers it in a way that makes me smile, laugh and remember why I love him so much.

Generally his response starts with "where did you come up with that question?". I've learned over the years to include the why/where when I ask. :)

For me. I would be devastated if anything happened to Boyd. I know that I will never find anyone else who compares to him. He is the one for me. He's there for me through everything and does whatever he can to make me smile. He loves to bring me treats/presents.

Early on I would concentrate on the things that bothered me about our relationship. Like all couples we don't agree 100% on everything. Plus we were both alone for several years and very set in our ways. One day I was having a pity party and woke up and thought what would I do if he wasn't in my life. I realized then that the negatives really weren't all that bad. I was just blowing them up in my mind and some of the things had happened in the past and nothing could change them.

I sat down that day and thought about everything that Boyd does for me. Some things were little and some were big. I realized that day that Boyd expresses his love through little gifts, making me laugh, and doing little things around the house for me along with the hugs and kisses and telling me he loves me. So I decided then to always remember the positives even on the tough days.

I do get frustrated with him but it's like a flash in a pan. I get frustrated, release the frustration (banging things around in the kitchen usually) and let it go. I try not to let everything build up until I explode - I don't like it when I'm like that and neither does he.

So tonight I challenge you. Think of what you love about your significant other and concentrate on that everyday.

Growing up

I am the kind of person that thinks of myself as a kid at heart. I also feel like I've only been out of college a couple of years and I'm just starting out in life. My husband is the same way and I think that's why we click so much.

Anyway, I found a new movie channel G4 they play "movies that don't suck". This morning it's like reliving my teenage years. I was so excited when one of my favorite movies came on. As I started watching I realized that the movie is just sad. In a way it broke my heart.

The movie is Red Dawn. The adventures of high school students who beat a foreign army that invades their town.

In my teenage years I loved to see that 'we' could make a difference and save the world. Idealistic yes. The thought of something like that happening here, I knew I'd be one of the girls in the movie. Kickin ass and taking names. No one messes with me or my town.

Now I just think it's sad. Teenagers taking on that burden. The thought of my nephews doing that....it scares the bejeebes out of me. While it happens in other parts of the world. I hope that it doesn't happen here.

I couldn't even watch. I know I should look at it as a movie and not real life. In this day and age it's hard.

So that's my story of feeling like a grown up. One that I know in my heart I am. Also knowing that I don't like being forced to grow up in an instant.

The best week ever!

I know I'm off my blog schedule but it's been one crazy week!

On Tuesday I went to my sorority meeting, didn't really want to but figured I should because it was a big gift day. :) There I was crowned Sweetheart of the year! Having only been in sorority for a year it's pretty impressive. I got a crown and they are talking about putting me in a parade. hehehe!

At work I'm on a hot project - we're writing a new online ordering system. Very graphical, simple and we think easy to use. So there's a big demo scheduled for Wednesday (was that really yesterday? seems like longer ago). That meant myself and my programmer lead were working overtime to make sure all the major items were working. We accomplished it all along with time to test in the morning and fix several other defects. whew!

I headed to the meeting to help demo and it went awesome! People were very impressed, including the owners of the company. Then the owner sent my boss an email to complement me on helping with the demo and coming up with an idea. woo hoo!

Tonight I broke a golden peacock rule. I went to the orange school and actually rooted for them. :) I guess it's OK now since my alma mater is in a different division.

The sporting event....wrestling! Boyd and I finally went to a real wrestling meet. We had a good time rooting for the black and orange. Unfortunately they lost to the #1 team 16 to 15. They are #2 and it was an awesome meet. The final match was heavy weight and he almost pinned his guy. That would have won it for them. :(

To top of the week Boyd and I continued our date night and headed to Dairy Queen! They opened today and we've been planning this for a week. The chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard was the BEST!

On another note I'm thinking I chose the wrong word for the year. I think it needs to be Patience. Emma is testing our patience most everyday. We hope she gets out of this puppy stage soon! Her cuteness won't last forever....or will it?

A new decade....

In the last 10 years our lives have changed dramatically!  These are some of the highlights we remember.

2000
* DH and I started dating seriously
* We got engaged in May.  He proposed at his parents grave.  I told him I had to think about it.  Dad was visiting and we went to Perkins to talk things out.  Boyd was so excited when I finally said yes.
* I moved in with him in Sept.  We lived in a two bedroom trailer.  It was small and cramped.  At the time I didn't like it and now some days I miss it.

2001
* In Feb I lost my job
* In April I found a new job
* In June I turned a significant age ending in a zero.
* In September we were married on my great grand parents 100th anniversary.  I was blessed to have my parents, brother, grandmother and all my aunts and uncles there.
* We were on our honeymoon on 9/11.
* In December I lost my dad.

2002
* Started the new year in FL without my husband.
* We went to the pro football hall of fame in Ohio.  We treated it like a second Honeymoon.  :)

2003
* We went to our first NFC regular season game.  At Lambeau field in Green Bay and yes I rooted for the Packers.  They were playing yucky Tampa Bay.
 2004

* We went to Reno for Darrick's wedding and I met Boyd's nephew Shantro for the first time.
* I fulfilled a dream and we went to The Ponderosa and then on to Virgina City.  Sadly the Ponderosa closed just after we visited. DH wants to add that we drove all the way around Lake Tahoe
* We went to Green Bay for a friends wedding and we went to the Packers Hall of Fame - Boyds first trip.
* We bought our first house and we moved back to my home town.
* DH changed jobs
* I started working from home.
* We went to our first Vikings game on Christmas Eve.  We definitely picked the wrong game...Packers vs Vikings.  Boyd was happy, I was not.  Very long drive home!

2005
* I lost my grandma

2006
* We took a weekend trip to Decorah and had a great time.
* We adopted Buddie - I can't believe how much we love him

2007
* We spent 4th of July in Dubuque with Boyd's sister, her kids and grandkids.  Had a great time!
* I took Linda to her first scrapbooking retreat and we met Martha IRL for the very first time.
* Two weeks before Christmas I was notified that I was being layed off in January.

2008
* We survived the worst flooding Waverly has ever seen.
* I found a new job 6 months after I was layed off.
* We went on a day trip to Red Wing, MN and stopped to visit Amy and the visiting Martha.
* We started staying at Hotel McNeeley - we love this 'hotel' and being able to visit with Family.
* I joined the Beta Sigma Phi (BSP) sorority.

2009
* We lost Loyd, my dear sweet brother in law.
* I was in a car accident.  Darn old lady didn't yield and tried to turned in front of me.
* Within a weeks period we found out my mom had cancer and she had surgery.  She is now cancer free.
* We adopted Emma
* I am the co president of BSP.

I also started and stopped three different home based businesses.

Cold & rainy day

There's one thing I love about cold & rainy & windy days.

Coming home and curling up under my favorite fleece blanket with my boy stretched out in my lap.

The second thing I love about cold & rainy & windy days.

The heated mattress pad on the bed - I stay toasty warm.

The third thing I love about days like this.

Curling up with the husband and the dog.

Here the high temp was 41* and the low was 40*. I'm not sure I remember a day with the temps that close.

That third thing is calling, it's time for bed. oh the weather lady said snow showers are possible...winter is coming.

Thinking of Danny

My scrapbooking friend Donnann lost her little boy Danny last fall. My thoughts and prayers are with her, her husband, their daughter Madison, extended family & friends.

Danny was an adorable little blonde haired boy. He loved the Cars movie. He was too young to be taken from his family.

We will be watching the Cars movie this weekend and remembering the red balloons we released last year in his memory.

PBS show & baseball

There's a show on PBS tonight called Crafts in America. Not sure if it's a series. We watched the first show and it's fairly interesting. I switched over to watch the Twins and Boyd started chanting craft show, craft show, craft show.

He said it's really interesting and he wanted to watch the second show.

I love that about him. He is one of my best supporters and will honestly tell me his opinion.

Let's go Twins!

Big game tonight

He likes the green team and I like the purple team. We are big fans of our respective teams.

Pray that we survive.

=)

Added post game....

Woo Hoo Vikings win!

I feel so sad for Boyd. He wasn't himself tonight, he really wanted to call Loyd and chat about the game. They would always call each other before, during and after the game to dissect what was happening and how they thought the game was going.

It's so hard to be going through our day to day life and then realize something we've done for years can no longer be done. I know it's life and I know it's something we'll get use to. I also know it's difficult and today is one of the really hard days.

I'd give anything to have Loyd riling me up about football again.

Very bittersweet. Wish I could enjoy the win more since this is the best season they've had in a lot of years.

Sunday, sunday, sunday

I'm hoping that if I say it enough I'll remember that it's Sunday and tomorrow is Monday and I need to go to work. I sat down to work on a project tonight and I seriously thought it was Saturday night.

A lot of things were accomplished this weekend. Several things were left undone. All in all it was a nice couple of days.

Here are the curtains I made...

I tried a new frosting...not sure if I'll try it again. Flowers are royal icing leftover from class.

Today I made lasagna - a little different than usual but it was awesome!

An odd day

Today has been an odd day. I'm thinking it's because I got up on the wrong side of bed! I always make a point to get out on my side but today since Boyd was getting ready for work I decide to be nice and not make him move. =)

Plus I was up by 5:30!? Granted I stayed in bed working on a few projects and catching up on the DVR. I was out of the house by 8 to hit the 6 hour sale at the grocery store - I will *NEVER* do that again! Too many people and too many people moving too slow.

When I got home I decided to make my moms cake and my lunch...it was early but I'd skipped breakfast and the Iowa game started at 11. Lunch was awesome and the cake was a flop.

The Iowa game was not fun to watch. In fact I left the room several times because I just wasn't in to it. Luckily they pulled off a win.

This afternoon I also made some fall curtains for the kitchen. They didn't turn out like I'd hoped. But they are done and kind of cute. I am very excited to have my sewing machine in my old office. It over looks the front of the house and gets some great sun when it decides to shine. I can totally see me spending a lot of time there this winter.

This evening I made another cake and it turned out great! Unfortunately it's not a reduced sugar one so I need to salvage a few pieces of that one for my mom. SIGH! I still need to figure out how to decorate everything.

Plans for tomorrow are up in the air. Maybe a family lunch and maybe a nephews football game.

Living life in neutral

I saw a quote recently about living your life in drive and not reverse or neutral. Lately I feel like I've been in neutral and I'm tired of it! I'm starting to switch into drive just running into a few bumps.

Change is in the wind and I'm not talking about the frost advisory.

I'm excited!

Prayers needed

I can't go into details yet. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to. August has been a tough month. I know that God only gives us what we can handle. I know I can handle this and whatever else September brings. I'm just mad.

Just please, do you annual check-ups and if a Dr recommends that you have standard testing done. Just do it - no matter what - more time will be spent trying to forget about the test than actually having the test.

My dad died because he wouldn't go in for a heart check up - I asked him to several times in the three months before he passed away. He died of something hereditary (just like his mom and aunt) that could have been treated. That made me very angry and I made sure it's on my health record so I don't fall through the cracks.

So if you need to think of me and kick the butt of anyone in your life who won't do the tests/check-ups. If you need me to I'll be glad to kick your butt. =)

life as a grown up...ah to be a kid again.

Catching up

Wow it's been almost a month since I updated the blog. Time sure does fly when you're having fun!

I started taking a cake decorating class in May with a friend from work. It's been fun and I'm sad that this week will be the last one. I had so much fun I'm taking another one in June. =)

Here's my first cake

Photobucket

We enjoyed this one at home.

Here's my second cake - the teacher told me it was an awesome improvement.

Cake 2

I took this one to work and the guys enjoyed it.

This weekend I'm working on a bunch of projects around the house and taking time for me too. My goal is to get the main living area totally picked up and mostly organized. So far I have the living room finished. Dining room half way done and the kitchen just started. I wish Boyd was here to handle wiping down the counters - he has more patience for that than me.

I hope that everyone has a nice and relaxing weekend. Remembering those we've loved and lost and those in the military who are supporting our freedom.

Oh by the way anyone want to buy a cake? hehehe.

Little projects

I can't believe all of the little projects we got accomplished tonight! There were a few more I wish I could have completed but I knew we wouldn't be able to get them finished in time for me to relax before bed.

When I got home from work Boyd had a plan for supper - burgers and fries. He did the burgers while I did the fries. We make such a good team!

Then it was outside to play some ball with Buddie and talk about where we wanted to plant the little birch tree I got from work. We decided on the corner of our lot, kind of close to another tree that needs to be taken down.

By that time it was 7 and time for American Idol. I'm not as into it this year so after hearing Allison sing I decided to work on another project. I've had a goal for the last few weeks to clear out a small corner of our mud room on the garden level. It involves moving things between three different rooms and all levels of our house. Needless to say I've been procrastinating.

Tonight I was motivated to unload the book shelf and move all of the books up to my old home office. I had an extra bookshelf up there so it was a great trade off. Plus I gained another bookshelf for my scrapping area. Double plus. So now all of the books have a new home and the book shelf is in place in the scrapping area. And I got some exercise in making all the trips up and down the stairs. Of course my boy had to follow me everywhere I went. Silly boy!

My goal for the corner is to add a comfy chair and side table. I'm looking forward to making it a comfy place to relax while scrapping or just to curl up and read.

Then Boyd said we should go plant our little tree. Again we worked well as a team.

Even after all of that I still had the energy to work on a little scrapping project. We are headed to the Hotel M this weekend and I want to make some note cards for my sister in law as a thank you for the hospitality. I used my Cricut to cut some cute little scalloped squares and circles.

I'm realizing that I spend way to much time online and before I know it the clock reads 9 and it's time for me to wind down. Tonight I forced myself to close the laptop just before we ate. That made a huge difference.

So I still have a little work to do in my relaxing. Not sure when I'll get back to them - lots of plans for the rest of the week. I figure if I do one little project each week I should have it done in a month. =)

Here's hoping we have more nights like this soon. I like it when we work together to get things done.
